Jordan is suffering from a serious water shortage. According to the United Nations, Jordan is the second water poorest country in the world. The water crisis is not only affecting Jordan, but also other countries around the globe. It is crucial that people work together to find solutions to prevent the problem of water shortage from increasing. Water is important for our livelihood and survival.
The first step in solving the water crisis in Jordan is to raise awareness and educate the people about the problem. When everyone, both adults and children, has a better understanding of the crisis, then people will be willing to do more to prevent this problem from increasing. Information sessions in schools should frequently educate the students about the problem and booths should be placed in public places such as King Hussein’s Park or malls where representatives can explain to the people about the water problem.
Another way of preventing the water problem from increasing is by forming volunteer committees made up of high school and university students and teaching them simple methods on how to temporarily fix the leaking pipelines. A large amount of water is wasted because of broken pipelines. These temporary repairs on the pipelines will save plenty of water from going to waste. Later on, experts can come and fix these pipelines permanently.
Water harvesting, which is collecting rainwater and storing it, is a very popular method of saving water. All homes and public buildings in Jordan should have gutters on the roof that are connected to downspouts. The downspouts then send all the rainwater into a tank or barrel where rainwater is stored. The gutters should be screened to prevent leaves and the storage tank should also be covered to prevent leaves and other insects from contaminating the water.
There are many other ways to prevent water shortage in Jordan. I will hopefully be sharing different ways to save water and I will also be sharing information, facts, and numbers to show how severe the situation is.
